ABSTRACT
Phytoplankton have important rule in marine ecosystem, information about distribution of phytoplankton biomass is very needed. The research on distribution of phytoplankton biomass in Sunda Strait was conducted during November 2008. Samples were taken from 10 stations using Kitahara net. Total phytoplankton abundance varied from 0.0193 ml/m³ - 0.2359 ml/m³. Phytoplankton Biomass graduated from maximum value at the near coastal area to the minimum at offshore. The higher concentration of phytoplankton observed at north part of Sunda Strait.

Keywords: distribution, biomass, phytoplankton, Sunda Strait.

ABSTRACT

Sunda Strait is one of the water mass passages from Indian Ocean to Indonesian waters. To study the through flow of Indian Ocean water masses through Sunda Strait and the affects of Java and Sumatera main lands to the strait, an oceanographic investigation was conducted in November 2008 using the RV Baruna Jaya VIII. The affects of Java main land was observed at several points along the Java coast where the less saline water recorded from the surface to the depth of 25-30 m at the northern part of the survey area and the high water temperature was recorded at the southern part. Analyzed the vertical distribution of temperature and salinity through the cross section at the middle of the strait it was shown that the Indian Ocean water entered the Sunda Strait. In this research, the value of Sunda Strait water mass in July 2001 also used as comparition for east monsson condition.

Key words: Sunda strait, water masses, main land affects, Indian Ocean
